This past weekend I visited the FASNY Firefighters Museum in Hudson. I was very happy to see the antique firetruck I drove at one of my past radio stations, for 10 years.
The 1950 Autocar fire engine, which was first used in Colonie, and then Earlton in Greene County, was acquired by the radio station I was working at in 1992 to be used a remote broadcast vehicle.
It was quite different driving it, as you had to “double clutch” and allow a little more distance to stop. Another feature was absolutely no heat in it, which made winter events interesting.
The truck made its last run in August 2001, while traveling up route 81 in Greenville, it died. Repairs would have been too expensive, so I approached the museum to see if they would consider taking it, being Autocar fire engines were rare, and I would rather have it in a museum than rusting away in a junkyard. And here it is, 25 years later.
