September 2nd is National V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day)! This day recognizes Allied Forces’ victory over Japan during World War II. If you’re wondering about there being two days, you’re right. While officials announced the surrender of Japan to the Allies on August 15th, 1945,
, thus, officially ending World War II.
Between 50- to 80-million lives were lost during World War II. These numbers include both military and civilian lives. More than 50 countries took up arms. The war consumed entire cities, and was fought on every continent except Antarctica. Even those who maintained isolationist stances held sympathies for one side or another.
The formal signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender took place on board the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. At that time, President Truman declared September 2nd to be the “official” V-J Day. However, over the years, many citizens of the United States celebrated August 14th as V-J Day in conjunction with the European observation on August 15th.

August 31st is Eat Outside Day! Yup – this day celebrates exactly what you think.
, but does it matter? Who really needs an excuse to pack up a picnic lunch and enjoy it with family/friends/coworkers in the park. Seriously, if you usually have lunch at your desk at work, why not head outside for your lunch break and having your meal under the Sun? You have a little more time? Then grill outside in the yard or take a portable grill to the park. This day is about enjoying the last days of summer and getting some fresh air – what better excuse than to eat while you’re doing it!

August 28th is Bow Tie Day! Are you one of those old school types? You know, that whole “dress to impress” thing that is the stuff of classic movies? The debonair look that makes ladies weak in the knees? Enter Bow Tie Day.
. That’s when soldiers in the Prussian Wars used a piece of knotted fabric to hold together their shirts. The modern shape of the bow tie was finalized in 1870, and since then, has only seen minor changes in shape and width ever since.
The early 20th century saw a prominence of bow tie usage that was so prevalent that it might as well have been a uniform. This popularity diminished sharply, though, during the World Wars, when fabric was scarce and bow ties submitted to less “structured” looks. And while they’ve ebbed and flowed in popularity over the years, they are coming to prominence yet again – and not just with a tux. These elusive sharp accessories are being sported by political leaders, intellectuals, chefs, and famous men and women alike, and for good reason. They look awesome!

From Columbia-Greene Humane Society:
We need your help.
Over the past week, nine dogs have arrived at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA under difficult circumstances, creating a sudden and serious shortage of available kennel space. And while we will always find a way to care for an animal who needs us, right now we desperately need adopters to help us make room.
Bella (brindle) and Luna (white), two pit bull mixes, arrived painfully thin. With regular meals and care, they have already gained approximately ten pounds each, while their former owner now faces charges related to their condition. Diesel, a German Shepherd Dog, was allegedly abandoned by his family, with charges also pending. Six black Lab/Pit mixes were removed from another residence in a case that remains under investigation.
That’s nine dogs in one week, on top of those already in our care and the normal stream of animals coming through our doors.
If you've been thinking about adopting, this is the time we truly need you to come meet them. Bella, Luna, Diesel and the six Lab/Pittie mixes all have sponsored adoption fees, and there are many other wonderful dogs here waiting for someone to take them home.
Every dog adopted right now does two things. First, it changes the life of the dog who gets to leave with you, and second—but equally as important—it opens a kennel for another dog who may desperately need that space tomorrow. We don't know who that next dog will be. We just need to make sure there is room when they get here.
Please, come meet our dogs. Help us make that room.

August 27th Is Banana Lovers Day! Today we celebrate one of the most popular fruits in the world. Did you know that
? That works out to about 100 individual bananas per person! Bananas are high in fiber and potassium. These properties can help prevent calcium loss, ulcers, high blood pressure, and certain kinds of cancer.
Funniest use of a banana took place in the movie Beverly Hills Cop, when Eddie Murphy stuck a few in the cop’s tailpipe.

August 26th is National Dog Day! National Dog Day has two goals: to honor dogs, and to rescue dogs from homelessness and abuse. It's an opportunity for us to recognize and appreciate the value and importance of dogs in our lives.
This
. In addition to giving love and companionship, dogs help us out in countless ways. They are watchdogs for our safety. They lead the blind. Dogs aid in search and rescue, and they seek out bombs and drugs.
The second goal of National Dog Day is to rescue dogs in need. On occasion, dogs need us to save them from homelessness and abuse. The goal of the National Dog Day foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs a year. Lend a hand to help a dog in need today, or any day.

August 25th is National Banana Split Day! National Banana Split Day recognizes the sweet ice cream treat served with a banana, whipped cream, and any number of toppings…the most important, of course, BANANAS!
As for where this glorious concoction came from,
rather than an ice cream parlor back in 1904. The inspired invention of 23-year-old pharmacist apprentice David Evans Strickler (who enjoyed experimenting with new soda fountain sundaes in his free time), this dessert combo caught on like wildfire among the college crowd in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It became so popular that they could charge customers double the price of a normal sundae, which was 5 cents at the time. The split is a variation of the traditional ice cream sundae and is usually served in a special dish called a banana boat.

August 24th is National Waffle Day! On this day in 1869, a man named Cornelius Swartwout received the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. Waffles are a delightful breakfast food and can be paired with almost any topping. Butter and maple syrup, fruit and whipped cream, a big scoop of ice cream, or even a helping of fried chicken—the choice is yours!
Did you know that
? It’s true! The Greeks would cook flat cakes called “obelios” between two metal pans held over a fire. Today, all you need is a waffle iron and a yummy recipe for waffle batter.
To celebrate National Waffle Day, cook up some homemade waffles and have breakfast-for-dinner tonight! Enjoy!

August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day! Today we celebrate a group of wise folk: senior citizens! Senior citizens are traditionally people who are over 60 years of age, but in today’s society, this seems pretty young!
to honor those who “reinforce historical roles as leaders and as links with our patrimony and sense of purpose as individuals and as a Nation.” Do something nice for your parents, grandparents, or just any senior citizen you see throughout your day. They will appreciate it, and it’s always nice to help the older folks out.
