May 29^th is National Biscuit Day! Today is the perfect day to treat yourself to a nice, warm biscuit. The snack got its name from French roots. “Bis” translates to twice, and “cuit” means cooked. Biscuits were created for soldiers and sailors, who needed their food to stay edible for long amounts of time. Soldiers referred to their biscuits as “stone bread.”

In America, different regions prefer different types of biscuits. In the north, tall and flaky biscuits are popular. But down south biscuits are a fan favorite, you will find they have soft and tender crumbs.

May 28^th is National Hamburger Day! Hamburgers are a classic meal for people of all ages. Nothing screams America like a big burger stacked a mile high with toppings galore. In fact,

Despite its importance to American culture, this staple food originated in Germany, in a town called Hamburg, where it got its name. But, putting the meat on a bun is an American tradition, and what we call a burger today started in Seymour, Wisconsin. Seymour is home to the annual Burger Fest, which featured the world’s largest burger back in 2001. The sandwich weighed 8,266 pounds!

To celebrate National Hamburger Day, you could head over to your favorite burger joint and treat yourself to the best item on the menu. Or, invite some friends over to grill burgers at home. It’s a perfect way to celebrate one of the country’s favorite foods, and the start to summer.

May 27^th is National Sunscreen Day! With summer on the horizon, it’s time to start enjoying the great outdoors. It is essential to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun and to enjoy a beautiful day without worry!

Even in ancient times, humans wanted products to protect their skin. Ancient Egyptians preferred the look of light skin to dark skin, so they invented a sun lotion to maintain a lighter complexion. They mainly used rice bran, jasmine, and lupine in their sun lotions – and some of these ingredients are still used in sunscreens today!

• In 1936, chemist Eugene Schueller invented a preventative sunburn cream, and went on to start L’Oreal.
• Around the same time, Swiss chemist Franz Greiter was inspired to develop a sun lotion after he was sunburned while climbing Mount Piz Buin. His product came to the market under the name Piz Buin in 1946, and is still sold today.
• In 1944, Florida pharmacist Benjamin Green patented Red Vet Pet sunscreen, which became Coppertone suntan cream and was very popular throughout the 1950s (and still is today!).

May 20^th is National Rescue Dog Day! How many of us look at our pets and think, “You rescued me?” A lot, right? Now imagine being an animal that actually gets rescued by a human...like YOU! National Rescue Dog Day was founded by Lisa Wiehebrink of Tails That Teach to bring awareness to the countless number of amazing dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted.

But also? To promote and encourage the spaying/neutering of animals and also humane education for young children. The day was inspired by Cooper, who was rescued in 2009 and now the main character in the “Tails That Teach” book series...which informs children about being kind and gentle to their pets. And P.S?

As emotional support companions, rescue dogs help to relieve anxiety, depression, and PTSD among the military or those who suffer from mental illness. Plus, people with autism can also benefit from services provided by trained rescue dogs.
